Although I am now the avid budget traveler, I have been fortunate enough to do some not-so-budget trips as well. One of the most unforgettable travel excursions must have been my one night stay at the Hotel auf der Wartburg, near Eisenach, Germany.
Situated in former East Germany, this hotel is beautifully surrounded by pristine scenery and is famous for its location next to the Wartburg, first built in 1067. Most notably, it was here that Martin Luther hid after refusing to recant his 95 Theses in 1521, and also where he first translated the bible into German, a history-changing event to be sure.
As a history buff, I was thrilled to be able to stay there, and the hotel did not dissapoint. Offering beautiful hiking and other outdoor activities as well as five-star accomodation, this hotel was excellent in every aspect of its customer service and presentation. Since our reservation was under a British passport, we were always addressed in English (despite knowing German), and luxury was never compromised.
