Traveling overland (that is, traveling sans airplane) is not a new concept, per se. However, a renaissance of sorts is happening with the growth of eco-tourism and environmentally responsible travel.
Personally, I’m a huge proponent of overland travel just for the fact that you are given a taste of a country from the comfort of a cushioned and air conditioned seat. Many people cite several reasons for not wanting to travel overland:
1) “I don’t know how to overland, it sounds so technical!” – fear not, brave backpacker! Even in such far off places as Europe, trains, cars, and ferries do exist (and for a steal to!).
2) “But it’s a different country, I can’t drive there!” – not only can you drive there, but you will bloody well enjoy it!
3) “I don’t speak the language, I will get lost!” – as many travel gurus have noted, traveling is not about the destination, but about the journey. Most of my funny stories and favorite experiences have happened as a direct result of getting lost. However, if you are absolutely mortified of putting one toe off the beaten path, rest assured, being polite and kind can put you back in the right direction.
4) How to I get to Europe and other places without flying? It’s possible, my friends! Many cruises offer “relocating” cruises, which are simply code for: We have to get our boat over to Europe and will offer discount one-way cruises for people to come along for the ride. Google it and see what you find!
No worries, fellow traveler! Traveling overland is better for the environment, often cheaper, very enjoyable, a great way to meet people, safe, and fun!
