Hey Guys,

Just an update from the EG. (which was written in a letter, taken to the USA by my friend, mailed to my boyfriend, and finally popped onto my blog, by him).

Life is great here. The BBPP has been an exceptional host, and it has and still isl a true pleasure meeting all of the locals and EG university Students which help and participate in the expedition. Tent living has not been a problem for me… surprisingly! The Island is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. I’m talking black sand beaches, rain forest, mountainous terrain (which I have only seen from afar), and amazing animals. The people are equally interesting-professors, ex-professional soccer players, and anthropologists. The weather has been extremely cooperative. It’s mostly Florida weather except with higher humidity.

I still don’t think I#ve entirely grasped the idea I am in Africa yet… I guess I am still waiting for the “moment”, per se. I did have two “oh-my-gosh-I-can’t-believe-this-is-happening” moments:

1. This first time I saw a monkey.

2. Hiking down the beach after a night of tumutuous rain, I got a breath-taking view of the mountain. Imagine a clear river running out to sea; trees lazily hanging their branches over the water as while flocks of birds fly skywards. All this beauty over shadowed by the awe-inspiring vision that is the mist-steeped mountains.

Anyway, the people are great, the food decent, the scenary amazing, and the monkeys present. A few thoughts:

  1. I like Iodine water.
  2. My sleeping mat has been re-named ’’The Ridges of Death’’
  3. I love sardines, and appreciate Spam.
  4. The land crabs here are super friendly.
  5. I need to invest in a Spanish-English dictionary ASAP.
  6. Still haven’t figured out how to get my cheap watch to stop beeping every hour (note to self, invest in expensive time keeping device).
  7. Monkey will defecate in and around a humans vicinity… a defense mechanism?
  8. I wake up every night and forget where I am. An Interesting experience in a pitch black tent, where physical orientation is almost impossible.
  9. I miss: peanut butter, beer and coca cola
  10. I have not looked at myself in a full mirror in a long time and was actually happy to see my reflection in a pool of water.

Any way thanks for now, I will get another update soon.
